In an effort to empower and give voice to some of the most vulnerable members of our community—children who are adopted, in foster care, have experienced trauma, or are neurodivergent—I have started a comprehensive, three-pronged photography experience. This initiative aims to provide a platform for these children to express themselves, tell their stories, and connect with the community, while also offering educational opportunities for local photographers to better serve and represent these unique narratives.
The first component of our program is a specialized workshop designed for local photographers. This workshop will focus on sensitive and inclusive approaches to working with children coming from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Expert speakers, including child psychologists, social welfare professionals, and experienced photographers in the field, will provide insights on how to create a safe, welcoming, and empowering environment for these children during photoshoots.
In the workshop we will discuss:
-Tips for Ensuring Children Feel Safe Before, During, and After Their Photoshoot
-How to Help a Child Who is Overwhelmed
-Communicating Session Expectations to Children and Families
-Methods and Tools for Crafting an Enjoyable Experience for Children and Families
-Exploring the Impact of Trauma on Your Photography Session
-Collaborating to Deliver Photos that Meet and Surpass their Expectations
-And more!
Following the workshop, photographers will have the opportunity to apply their learning in a styled shoot. These sessions will pair photographers with children and families, allowing for a hands-on experience under the guidance of our team. The primary goal is to capture the unique personalities, stories, and aspirations of each child, emphasizing their strength and resilience.
The second prong of our initiative is a camp designed specifically for children who are in foster care, were adopted, have experienced trauma, or are neurodivergent. Over the course of the week, participants will engage in various photography-related activities, including basic photography lessons (lighting, shutter speed, composition, ISO, ect.), storytelling through images with creative prompts, and allow the students to explore and express themselves through different types of photography (portrait, abstract, documentary, ect.) The camp will not only foster a sense of community among the children but also empower them to express their perspectives and creativity through the lens. Professional photographers, storytellers, and counselors will support the children throughout the camp, ensuring a nurturing and supportive environment with a low student to teacher ratio. There will be 20 spots available!
To culminate the project, there will a gallery exhibition showcasing the collective experiences, stories, hopes, and dreams of the participating children, as captured in their photographs and those taken of them. This exhibition will serve as a powerful testament to the resilience of these young individuals and the beauty of their diverse experiences. It will also provide an opportunity for the broader community to engage with and support these children, breaking down barriers and fostering a more inclusive society.
In conclusion, this three-pronged photography experience seeks to make a lasting impact on the children it serves and the wider Birmingham community. By empowering these young individuals through photography and storytelling, I hope to provide them with a platform to be seen and heard on their own terms. Capturing Hope will not only enrich the lives of the children and photographers involved but also enhance the cultural and social fabric of our community.
If you're interested in joining Camp Capturing Hope, start by applying here and attaching your resume. Must be 18 years or older. Experience working with kids who are neurodivergent is a plus, but not required. $750 stipend for the week of camp!
